Cardtronics: enabling a new market expansion

This global financial services infrastructure provider was looking for geographic diversification and to expand into attractive new markets. Given the size, the scale of challenges, and potential acquisition complexity, they needed validation before formally closing the transaction. So they engaged us to help them…

Why Elixirr?

We have practical, international experience in mergers and acquisitions, and strategy. This, combined with a deep operational knowledge of South Africa (where they were looking to expand) made us the perfect partner for this project.

01 Overview

This global financial services infrastructure provider was looking for geographic diversification and to expand into attractive new markets. Given the size, the scale of challenges, and potential acquisition complexity, they needed validation before formally closing the transaction in South Africa. So they engaged us to help them…

02 Outcome

Delivered deep insights on the target, industry & geography to enable a Go/No Go decision for the provider.

03 Method

Primary research, due diligence & macroeconomic review of a new market.

The challenge

In order to proceed with the transaction, this infrastructure provider needed a detailed analysis of the key drivers and risks within the economy of this new market. Once a deep understanding of the industry factors had been gained, they could progress to due diligence of the target.

The approach

Primary research was key throughout this project. To provide this infrastructure provider with a macroeconomic review of the new market, we started by researching and synthesising the key areas of impact, and collated economic forecasts.

Since 2009 when we were founded, we have built a strong foundation of expertise across financial services, particularly within South Africa. We drew deeply on this expertise to correlate the macro drivers with the industry results to present a crystal clear picture for this infrastructure provider. We made sure we spent time interviewing the chief executive officers, the chief operating officers, and various senior stakeholders in the industry for this infrastructure provider.

By establishing a value exchange to produce the primary market research, we developed and consolidated relationships with a dozen of the most senior stakeholders in the industry.

The final stage was due diligence of the target acquisition, including a review of the target’s financial, legal, and operational position to ensure accuracy. A thorough review enabled validation of the detailed financial model and projections, and key members of management were interviewed.

The value delivered

We provided this global infrastructure provider with a clear understanding on the transaction, ensuring they had a strategic, value-added case that was compelling enough to proceed.

Since 2009 when we were founded, we have built a strong foundation of expertise across financial services, particularly within South Africa. We drew deeply on this expertise to correlate the macro drivers with the industry results to present a crystal clear picture for this infrastructure provider.
