Taco Bell and its more than 350 franchise organizations operate over 7,000 restaurants that serve more than 40 million customers each week in the U.S. Internationally, the brand is growing with nearly 500 restaurants across almost 30 countries around the globe.
- Outcome 1: Deploying 60+ data pipeline enhancements within the first 12 months
- Outcome 2: Rolling out a robust deployment and architectural assurance process
- Outcome 3: Establishing ongoing well-architected framework reviews, and achieved $112,000 of AWS cost savings
- Outcome 4: Maintained a 99% SLO achievement

The challenge
In its technology separation from parent YUM!, Taco Bell had an opportunity to build its core data and analytics solutions from the ground up. Leveraging multiple partners to accelerate this deployment, the data solution followed a variety of methodologies and adherence to best practices resulting in complex system to operate and enhance. The solution covers analytic solutions from franchisee users through executives across every data asset within the organization. The technology landscape covers AWS, Redshift, Talend, IICS, MicroStrategy, Tableau, PowerBI, YellowfinBI and various serverless data processing architectures. Our initial challenges included:
• The backlog of software to update and bring in licensing compliance
• Inefficient and error-prone data pipelines
• Lack of visibility into workload based spend and cost optimization abilities
The approach
Firstly, we established a core service desk to triage and route incidents to the appropriate resolver group. This approach led to optimization of workforce and faster resolutions.
As new technologies and workloads entered the ecosystem, we scaled our support team to absorb these changes while optimizing our support processes to achieve a cost-neutral change.
The value delivered
The implementation of our team’s solution yielded tangible benefits for Taco Bell, resulting in clear and fast data insights. The managed services team built an optimized and scalable solution for Taco Bell to continue its growth secure with the needed data to make fact-based decisions. By the end of the engagement the team was managing 260+ data pipelines, that is a over 300% growth in account over our tenure.
