Our client, an independent hydrocarbon exploration company, required a modern data and analytics platform to enable advanced analytics across their value chain. To address this need, we provided strategic architecture support and design services, modernized their data platform, implemented cloud migration, introduced a lakehouse data architecture and set up an agile project team. The solution led to the development of a modernized and enhanced Enterprise Data and Reporting Platform, essential for supporting daily, monthly, and quarterly operational and analytical reporting. It serves critical business functions such as production operations, finance and accounting, supply chain and inventory, risk, and environmental management. These functions heavily rely on centralized access to this data.
- Outcome 1: Advanced & more centralized access to enterprise data & reporting resulting in high efficiency data & reporting capabilities
- Outcome 2: Enabled access to core production and operational metrics across the enterprise
- Outcome 3: Established metrics to monitor platform optimization
The challenge
The hydrocarbon exploration industry faces mounting pressures from rising energy demands, sustainability goals and the need for operational efficiency. Companies must adopt advanced technologies to gain access to data in order to understand & optimize resource extraction, reduce environmental impacts and adapt to market volatility. Legacy systems, however, often lack the agility and insights required to meet these demands. For our client, a hydrocarbon exploration company with 2.2 billion barrels of reserves engaging in onshore oil and gas drilling, exploration, and production in the United States, these trends highlighted a critical need to modernise their operations. They embarked on a transformative journey to build a modern data and analytics platform to ensure competitiveness in the evolving market.
Our client wanted to develop a modern data and analytics platform to provide new analytical capabilities and self-service across the exploration and production value chain. Legacy systems were not equipped to integrate operational and forecasting data effectively, creating inefficiencies that hindered real-time decision-making and innovation. To address these gaps, the organization needed a unified platform that would streamline operations, drive efficiencies and unlock advanced analytics capabilities.
The approach
We developed a modern data and analytics platform tailored to the client’s exploration and production value chain needs alongside other critical supporting functions like finance & accounting, supply chain, health, risk & environmental. Starting with strategic architecture design, the data platform was modernized through cloud migration and the implementation of a data lakehouse architecture. Our team provided pattern-based data engineering design and support with embedded continuous improvement and development to ensure scalability. We established an agile project team, flexible enough to support diverse functions including asset management, production operations, supply chain, HSE and back-office. We delivered 24/7 support to proactively monitor and optimise the enterprise data platform across both cloud and on-premise solutions, enabling smooth deployment and performance reliability.
The value delivered
The project transformed our client’s operations by integrating data from multiple field systems and incorporating forecasting tools, enabling predictive capabilities that reduced downtime, improved production efficiency and minimised workovers. The implementation of a “client value map” provided enterprise-wide visibility into core production and operational metrics. Additionally, the establishment of platform-wide metrics empowered the client to continuously optimise the performance of their new data platform.
