Regardless of deregulation chatter, protecting customers and markets must remain the north star for any financial institution.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Cost discipline as a strategic foundation<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In volatile markets, cost control often becomes reactive. But leading firms embed it as a long-term capability \u2013 treating cost discipline as a foundation for transformation, not just a lever for margin defense.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Growth, redefined: Organic and M&amp;A<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Customer expectations are rising and loyalty is declining. Institutions that deeply understand and serve their existing base are best positioned for sustainable organic growth.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the same time, M&amp;A activity is rising again. Following economic uncertainty in 2023, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forvismazars.us\/forsights\/2025\/02\/regional-financial-services-mergers-acquisitions-updates-%E2%80%93-q4-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deal activity increased by around 35% in 2024<\/a> \u2013 although volumes remain below historic levels. For regional banks, M&amp;A presents an opportunity to enter growth markets and acquire capabilities, as seen in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.southstatebank.com\/global\/about\/stories-and-insights\/southstate-to-acquire-texas-based-independent-bank-group-inc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SouthState\u2019s acquisition of Independent Bank<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huronconsultinggroup.com\/insights\/regional-mid-cap-banks?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Valley National\u2019s acquisition of Leumi.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To deliver value, regional banks must clarify their M&amp;A goals and assess where inorganic growth can fill capability gaps.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Technology isn\u2019t optional, it\u2019s foundational<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Legacy infrastructure continues to hold many institutions back. Cloud computing and AI are no longer optional add-ons, they are baseline enablers for scale, speed and insight.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cloud adoption is accelerating, with Software, Platform and Infrastructure as a Service models offering flexibility, cost efficiency and stronger integration with fintech partners. For regional banks, hybrid cloud can provide a path forward that balances innovation with compliance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On AI, regional banks have a real opportunity to lead. With <a href=\"https:\/\/kpmg.com\/us\/en\/articles\/2024\/kpmg-2024-us-ceo-outlook.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">81% of banking CEOs naming GenAI a top priority<\/a>, the focus is shifting from simple automation to broader impact, including enhanced customer experiences and better decision-making. Success will require strong data management, mature architecture and AI literacy across the business.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Understanding a new generation of customers<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Gen Z and Gen Alpha are reshaping what customers expect from financial institutions. These digital natives expect seamless, mobile-first, AI-powered experiences and they\u2019re not afraid to move to get them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.finder.com\/uk\/banking\/digital-banking-statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">around 40% of banking customers will hold digital-only accounts, up from 24% in 2023.<\/a> Fintechs are setting the pace, but regional banks \u2013 with the agility to adapt quickly \u2013 are well placed to compete.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meeting these expectations will require more than new channels.
