With a PMO too immature for large-scale, business-wide, concurrent transformations, this retailer was looking for help. So we set up an effective PMO operating model for them & developed the governance, processes & tools to support it.<\/p>\n

This UK department store\u00a0was delivering their multi-year\u00a0plan, in support of their strategic agenda and financial objectives. Several major transformational change initiatives had been launched, but the existing project management office (PMO) was immature and not set up to manage large-scale, business-wide, concurrent transformations. They needed help defining the PMO operating model and developing the governance, processes and tools to support their new way of working.<\/p>\n

We have a great working relationship with this retailer, having delivered a very successful IT Target Operating Model project for them. \n The challenge<\/h2>

The retailer\u00a0wanted a PMO function that would evolve at both an IT and wider business level. This was to support greater visibility of risks, facilitate better decision-making and promote confidence in the overall transformation journey. The existing roadmap programs and project plans needed to be consolidated into one single view of outcomes, milestones and interdependencies, highlighting potential risks and issues.<\/p>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div> <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n

\n The approach<\/h2>
\n
\n

Working alongside the retailer\u2019s\u00a0existing PMO team and wider stakeholders, we designed a model that would enable\u00a0effective program and project management of the change journey for IT and the business.<\/p>\n

We did this by:<\/p>\n

  • using our proprietary frameworks and experience, we built and rolled out a \u2018playbook\u2019 of processes, tools and frameworks.<\/li>\n
  • developing the PMO organization structure, roles and responsibilities.<\/li>\n
  • making recommendations on improvements to process, organization, technology and governance.<\/li>\n
  • consolidating the strategic\u00a0roadmap program, projects and key milestones.<\/li>\n
  • providing constructive challenge to the schedule of programs and projects.<\/li>\n
  • making recommendations regarding portfolio hierarchies.<\/li>\n
  • developing the \u2018plan on a page\u2019, highlighting the seasonal breakdown to 2020 by project and audience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n <\/div>\n <\/div>\n <\/div> <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\n

    \n The value delivered<\/h2>

    We successfully designed the new PMO operating model, received\u00a0sign-off from the Operations Director, and deployed it into the transformation programs.
