Every week brings another AI breakthrough \u2013 a faster model, a smarter agent, a new prediction about how dramatically business is about to change.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The technology\u00a0is moving at\u00a0an extraordinary\u00a0speed. But whilst everyone is talking about what AI can do, far fewer are asking a more important question: what becomes more valuable because of it?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My view is simple.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

AI is making\u00a0human\u00a0judgement the ultimate competitive advantage.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As\u00a0access to\u00a0intelligence becomes abundant,\u00a0human\u00a0judgement becomes scarce.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

AI can\u00a0analyse\u00a0more data than any executive team. It can generate recommendations in\u00a0seconds,\u00a0identify\u00a0patterns humans might\u00a0miss\u00a0and accelerate work that once took weeks. But it does not always\u00a0analyse\u00a0that data more effectively.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What it\u00a0can’t\u00a0do is decide which opportunity is worth pursuing, which trade-off is acceptable or which risk is worth taking. It\u00a0also makes mistakes,\u00a0generalises\u00a0from incomplete\u00a0information\u00a0and misses things human beings pick up through interaction,\u00a0observation\u00a0and lived experience. And it\u00a0doesn’t\u00a0carry\u00a0the consequences of a decision.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

People do.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That’s\u00a0why I\u00a0don’t\u00a0believe AI is replacing leadership. I think\u00a0it’s\u00a0exposing it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the past year\u00a0I’ve\u00a0spoken to boards,\u00a0CEOs\u00a0and leadership teams across industries. The conversation has changed dramatically. Twelve months ago, the discussion was\u00a0largely about\u00a0the technology\u00a0itself. Today,\u00a0it’s\u00a0about where AI genuinely creates value,\u00a0which business activities are worth going after,\u00a0how\u00a0organisations\u00a0should redesign themselves around it and who is accountable for the outcomes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The technology is\u00a0not\u00a0the\u00a0only\u00a0constraint\u00a0\u2013\u00a0leadership is, and the technology still has constraints of its own.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0organisations\u00a0creating the greatest value from AI\u00a0aren’t\u00a0necessarily deploying the most tools.\u00a0They’re\u00a0making better decisions about where to use them, where not to use\u00a0them\u00a0and what human oversight needs to sit around them.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They’re\u00a0redesigning how work gets done, embedding AI into everyday decision-making and changing operating models to capture value\u00a0\u2013\u00a0not simply adding another piece of technology to the stack. It is still just\u00a0a technology. People still buy from people.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That’s\u00a0a fundamentally different challenge. It\u00a0isn’t\u00a0an AI strategy;\u00a0it’s\u00a0a business strategy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Too many\u00a0organisations\u00a0are still asking, “Which AI tools should we implement?”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The better question is, “How should our business create value in a world where\u00a0access to\u00a0intelligence is\u00a0becoming dramatically cheaper?”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Only then does it make sense to decide where AI belongs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The same shift is happening in consulting.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For decades, much of our industry has been built around process,\u00a0analysis\u00a0and large delivery teams. AI\u00a0has the potential to change\u00a0the economics of that\u00a0model and start to level the field.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Clients\u00a0won’t\u00a0continue paying premium fees for work technology can now produce in minutes. They will continue paying for experience. For commercial judgement. For leaders who can cut through uncertainty,\u00a0apply human\u00a0context,\u00a0make difficult\u00a0decisions\u00a0and stand behind them when the stakes are high.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That’s\u00a0not a threat to consulting.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It’s\u00a0a challenge\u00a0to\u00a0firms whose value was built on producing analysis rather than delivering outcomes, and an opportunity for boutiques with real insight.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At\u00a0Elixirr,\u00a0we’ve\u00a0always believed clients pay us for what changes, not what we produce. AI simply allows us to remove more of the low-value work and spend more time solving the problems that genuinely move the needle.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The implications go beyond today’s leadership\u00a0teams. If AI increasingly performs routine analysis,\u00a0organisations\u00a0must become far more intentional about developing judgement in the next generation of leaders.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Future executives\u00a0won’t\u00a0build experience by producing endless presentations\u00a0\u2013\u00a0they’ll\u00a0build it by learning how to question AI, apply\u00a0human and\u00a0commercial context, navigate\u00a0ambiguity\u00a0and take responsibility for decisions.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Those capabilities cannot be automated.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Technology will continue to improve, models will become faster, and costs\u00a0will continue to fall.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

None of that changes the fundamental reality: technology creates capability, but\u00a0human\u00a0judgement creates value.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In a world where everyone has access to\u00a0similar AI, the\u00a0organisations\u00a0that outperform\u00a0won’t\u00a0be the ones using the most AI\u00a0\u2013\u00a0they’ll\u00a0be the ones making the best decisions with it.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
