We like doing things differently, and this includes how we find the best talent to join our team. Something we have wanted to do for a very long time is to launch an exchange programme to give talented young South Africans the opportunity to gain international work experience with us in London. And now we’ve found a way…
As our longest-standing client, we couldn’t be prouder to launch this programme with Standard Bank. It’s only been possible because of their open-minded, forward-thinking, people-focussed attitude. Together, we’re delighted to welcome Amirah Kolia and Phuluso Kwinda to the Elixirr team from Standard Bank CIB Operations.
This pioneering 2-year programme not only gives Amirah and Phuluso exposure to new markets, industries and clients, but it gives us the opportunity to give back to the South African economy where we have strong roots. Stephen Newton, our Founder and Managing Partner, personally put together the programme with Samuel Van Niekerk, Head of CIB Operations at Standard Bank Group.
“It is an important part of our strategy to give back to Africa. Standard Bank first became our client back in 2011 and since then our partnership has grown from strength to strength. To establish this exchange programme with one of our longest-running clients is not only testament to a true partnership but also to our shared passion to nurture and develop talent.”
“It’s something very close to my heart. A small way we can enable people who have grown up in South Africa and are talented within Standard Bank to have the opportunity to expand their skillsets by working in London and experiencing an international market. I was a wide-eyed twentysomething when I first came to London to work, and remember being excited about the Tube just as they are now! I dreamt big. I tried, I failed and I tried again. I grew as an entrepreneur. Now I’m lucky enough to pass these opportunities on to a new generation of South African entrepreneurs.
This passion is driven not only from a desire to help develop them into better professionals, but so that they can be the future leaders for Africa from within or from an international platform. I am in no doubt that Amirah and Phuluso will make a huge impact to the team.”
Amirah and Phuluso bring a diversity of experience, a real drive to embrace new cultures and excitement to learn about international markets. Social entrepreneur Amirah Kolia says:
“As a young South African, to be afforded the opportunity to be part of the very first Elixirr–Standard Bank exchange programme is certainly a major highlight of my (still short) career. Relocating and settling into work has been a wonderful experience thanks to the incredible support from the team. I can already tell Elixirr is a special place.”
“I’m learning so much already, and working here has been so different from working at Standard Bank. What is second nature at Elixirr we called “new ways of working” in South Africa. It really is an agile company. I’m looking forward to growing and to becoming the absolute best version of myself here!”
We are hopeful we can continue to expand this programme into the future and welcome more and more international talent into our team.
